History
Gorbahn Professional Alternative began as Professional Alternative Resources (PAR) in September 1997, offering employment support services in Smithers for adults with diversibilities. Initially focused on job training and placement, PAR established Instant Replay Sports, a second-hand sports store, to provide flexible vocational training and meaningful employment.
In 1998, the organization expanded into residential services, opening a group home in the Silverking Subdivision. Over the years, it grew to serve additional residents and achieved CARF Canada accreditation in 2004, recognizing its high standards of care. By 2017, GPAR had added a second home in Smithers, followed by a third home, G3, in 2020.
Beyond its own operations, GPAR played a key role in the community. In 2007, its CEO helped establish HIGH ROAD Services Society and led its growth while also serving as Executive Director of Dik Tiy Housing Society, expanding affordable housing options for seniors and adults with developmental disabilities. In 2019, he stepped away from these roles to focus solely on GPAR.
In June 2024, after 27 years of service, Gorbahn Professional Alternative turned its day-to-day operations over to AiMHi of Prince George. Today - GPAR focuses on leasing its properties for ongoing services and providing financing solutions to support businesses in acquiring their own properties. While its role has evolved, the organization remains committed to fostering stability and opportunities within the community.
““Over the years we have learned many lessons. One of these lessons is that there is no one right way, and no final answer to the task of supporting individuals with developmental disability, in our community. We know and expect that we will continue to change our ideas and our practices as we learn more. We are committed to excellence in these endeavours””
